As the Junction becomes too expensive, many buyers are turning to a nearby area Dupont and Lansdowne for value, some artists and video game developers have already moved to the area. 299 Campbell Avenue Condos is a new condo project by TAS at Dupont and Lansdowne. This small builder, which is behind Duke Condos in the Junction, has a mantra to build to scale in the neighbourhood, push the envelope of architectural design and bring positive changes to the surrounding community. Dupont and Lansdowne, some say this area is pre-gentrification and set to be the next Liberty Village, but that is up for debate.
There’s definitely a hipster vibe, coffee shops, restaurants, fashion boutiques, design studios are popping up, especially one block south at Wallace and Emerson. Yet, 1011 Lansdowne, on the north east corner of Dupont and Lansdowne, a notorious apartment building with a reputation for prostitution, drugs and illegal coops has mounting police presence and pressure from the newcomers to clean up. Also, the hipsters say it’s not that bad and they want the area to remain just the way it is, affordable. Will a few new condos noticeably change the neighbourhood? Are developers building in this area because the land is cheap or the area is up and coming? Will the addition of Metro and Shoppers Drug Mart and wealthier newcomers bring the much needed change to the neighbourhood?
Time will tell how this all plays out. 299 Campbell Avenue offers 18 storeys, 270 suites and a six storey podium that holds retail, commercial and office space.
